SouthWest Breakfast Club has been feeding Verdun Elementary School kids for many years (10 ?) already. The volunteers do an amazing job and have a lot of fun.

The Mission is hosting Verdun’s ‘table de concertation’ in food security and urban agriculture meeting. The day’s goal is to elaborate the action plan for the next few years. All organizations and citizens who feel concerned are welcome ! Bring your own lunch.

This week we are cooking for the community, that is served at 12 :30. There will be pulled pork, roast vegetables, fresh bread and soup, and raw blondies and brownies for dessert.

Verdun sans faim, 12 h à 16 h
La Mission accueille la table de concertation en sécurité alimentaire et en agriculture urbaine Verdun sans faim. La rencontre a pour objectif l’élaboration du plan d’action de la table pour les prochaines années. Tous les organismes et les citoyens concernés sont les bienvenus. Formule « apportez votre lunch ».
Les recettes vite faites, atelier de cuisine pour les 10-12 ans, 17 h à 18 h

Je commence à prendre les inscriptions pour la session d’hiver, qui commencera en janvier. Pour cette session, je prends aussi les paiements à l’avance, pour les parents qui le souhaitent – 5$ par atelier.
MERCREDI 25 octobre
Atelier de production communautaire, 9 h à 12 h 30
On prépare le repas communautaire, qui sera servi à 12 h 30. Cette semaine, il y a du porc effiloché et des légumes rôtis au menu. On fera aussi du pain frais et de la soupe, bien sûr. Et pour le dessert, ce sera brownies et blondies crudivores.
Qui veut faire partie de la Dream Team Cuisine ? Contactez-moi, je cherche trois cuisiniers bénévoles pour compléter l’équipe.
Repas communautaire Mercredi m’attend, 12 h 30
Un mercredi sur deux, la Mission offre à tous un repas communautaire. TOUS : sans condition de ressource, de croyance, de religion, d’orientation sexuelle, etc. C’est pour absolument tout le monde ! Nous acceptons tous les dons.
En parallèle au repas, il y a un minimarché de fruits et légumes, où vous pourrez vous approvisionner en produits frais à prix coûtant.

L’atelier de cuisine pour les 13 ans et plus n’affiche pas encore complet ! Encouragez votre adolescent à se joindre au groupe J

Projet GUSTO, 10 h 30 à 14 h 30
Cuisine collective pour les 65 ans et plus, proposée par l’Université Concordia et le Centre de réadaptation du Montréal métropolitain. Cette initiative s’adresse aux aînés qui ne cuisinent pas ou peu, et vise à leur faire développer des habiletés dans un contexte de perte de mobilité.

Cette semaine, Un plant de tomate à la fois, en collaboration avec la Maison de l’environnement, vous propose un atelier sur le thème du O-déchet. On illustrera le propos en cuisine avec des recettes à base de poulet et/ou de courge.

De notre virée mensuelle à l'entrepôt de Moisson Montréal, nous rapportons des produits frais qui ont besoin d'être transformés immédiatement, sous peine de finir aux vidanges. Je cherche des bénévoles pour nous aider à vider le VUS, à trier et à ranger les produits et à transformer ceux qui ont besoin de l'être.

Age 3.0: Aging in the City is a one-day event be held Concordia University in Montreal geared towards the general public. With free activities in both French and English, Age 3.0 sets out to make bridges between university research on aging, local organizations and the Montreal community. Join us on in the atrium on the ground floor of the EV Building, then make your way to panels, exhibits, performances and interactive kiosks and enjoy a lively and thought provoking day.
This event is organized by Ageing + Communication + Technologies (ACT), Communautique, engAGE and Concordia University.

Nous y souviendront de nos bien-aimés, avec communion, prières et chants.
Chez nous, il n’y a pas de frais pour les funérailles. Nous avons plutôt la tradition de recevoir des dons « à la douce mémoire » de nos disparus, et ces dons sont versés au Fonds commémoratif (Memorial Fund) de notre communauté pour soutenir notre ministère.
Au chapitre 21,4 du livre de l’Apocalypse, une merveilleuse promesse nous est faite : « Maintenant la demeure de Dieu est parmi les humains ! Il demeurera avec eux et ils seront son peuple. Dieu lui-même sera avec eux et il sera leur Dieu. Il essuiera toute larme de leurs yeux. Il n’y aura plus de mort, il n’y aura plus ni deuil, ni lamentations, ni douleur. Les choses anciennes auront disparu. » (Le message) L’espérance nous amène à croire en cette promesse et au nouveau ciel à venir. Cette espérance se fonde sur notre Dieu d’Amour qui, le troisième jour, a lancé cet appel à Jésus : « Viens, mon Fils! Rentre à la maison! » Ainsi, soyons audacieux dans notre espérance en affirmant que la vie est plus puissante que la mort !
Nous connaissons ce sentiment doux-amer… Nous le retrouvons dans les couleurs de l’automne : tellement éblouissantes mais tellement éphémères. Elles nous rappellent le cycle de la vie et le défi du deuil, qui est de chérir nos souvenirs mais aussi de lâcher prise.

Annual All Saints Memorial Celebration 2017
at SouthWest United Church

I heard a voice saying,
“Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord
for they rest from their labours.”
- Revelation 14:13
The changing of colours of the fall foliage is spectacular. Leaves are at their most vibrant just before they die and fall to the earth to compost into the soil that will nurture future growth. We know this cycle of endings and new beginnings. We celebrate a hope rooted in Christian faith that death does not have the final word, that there is a rest from labours for those who have died. God holds them close in grace and we in a holy remembrance in our hearts.
We gather to remember the “brilliant colours” of our loved ones at our All Saints Communion Memorial Tribute on October 29th. Memorial gifts received before the 27th will be included in our printed insert. E-mail or call the office so that we can remember all our loved ones during the service.
Although we do not not ask for money for funerals, our tradition is the receiving of offerings “in loving memory” to the Memorial Fund. All gifts given to the Fund are gratefully acknowledged and a receipt given for tax purposes. If you have already offered a gift his year, thank you.
The fall colours, so beautiful and so fleeting, mirror the cycle of our lives and the challenge of our grief, which is to remember, to treasure, and also to let go.
When we are living, it is in Christ Jesus,
and when we’re dying, it is in the Lord.
Both in our living and in our dying,
We belong to God, we belong to God.

This week in the kitchen
Dear kitchen friends,
Before telling you what’s going on this week in our wonderful kitchen, let me start with thank-yous.
THANKSGIVING
Some of our cooking projects are only possible because volunteers from the community turn up and give a helpful hand. Last Friday, SouthWest Mission catered a 5 à 7 buffet for Grand Potager’s harvest party. The food looked and tasted amazing, and I got an ego-boosting shower of compliments. I need to share the warmth with my kitchen team, without whom the food would have been quite different -- but certainly not better! Thanks to Lauren, from Un plant de tomate à la fois, to Matthieu Auclair, chef of Le Détour, in Rosemont, to Johanne Pilon, one of our local gardeners, and to Noémie and Ariane, two sisters who come to TeenCuisine. Oh you amazing people!

Collective kitchen workshop with Femmes du monde, 4:30-7:00 pm
Femmes du monde, from the Centre des femmes de Verdun, will be having a collective kitchen workshop at the Mission every second Monday. Children are welcome! An adult will supervise the kids while the mums are in the kitchen.

Ants, mice and other unpleasant vermin have started looking for a warm place to spend the Winter. We want to make our kitchen as UNwelcoming as possible, which translates into a thorough cleaning job. Volunteers needed!
